Grand Canyon Cares: Giving Back and Building A Team

At Grand Canyon Home Services, we love to help out in our community and we had such a great opportunity to volunteer for the second time with Feed My Starving Children in Tempe, Arizona.

Feed My Starving Children partners with organizations around the world to reach undernourished children and owner Nick Neill said it was a pleasure to be able to give back to the community and people around the world.

“My wife Crystal and I did it with our 12-year-old son Jacob and it was very impactful,” Neill said. “They do a very good job explaining the need behind the organization of feeding kids around the world where food is not readily available. Even the poorest of our poor can get food but in other nations, there just simply isn’t food. They don’t have the water to grow their own food.”

Neill said after the first time he went to volunteer with his family, he knew it would be a great opportunity to bring his team at Grand Canyon Home Services to volunteer and get better working as a team.

“When we went the first time, we recognized that it would be awesome for the whole company to do,” Neill said. “It’s very much a team process. It’s a great exercise for communication, team work and patience. It’s a good test, because there needs to be consistency in the scooping department. If things aren’t happening correctly on the front end, it slows the whole process down. There’s changes on the fly that need to happen. It’s a very upbeat atmosphere.”

For every box the team filled, a cheer rang out to commemorate the total number of boxes packed. The fast-paced setting and importance on precision also had a positive effect on the team in Neill’s eyes.

Neill said it’s just a nice feeling knowing what they’re doing is having a positive impact on people.

“We’re looking forward to doing something positive for the world in general and getting our team together to do that,” Neill said. “It’s a day of truly giving back and I look forward to it to get our team out and myself out to have a chance to help other people. We’re just here to help and give back and share our good fortune. We’ve all got capable bodies that can do this.”

At the end of the day, it’s always about people. Neil said there’s nothing more important to Grand Canyon Home Services than taking care of their people — from the community and the staff to the customers and their families.

“Yes we fix things such as water heaters, but the machine belongs to a person and that’s the reason we’re in business,” Neill said. “We work on machines and we’re big on treating every home like it’s your grandmother’s home. We like knowing we’re helping people live their lives easier. We’re always watching out for the customer’s best interest. That’s our culture. We love helping people and that’s why we love working with Feed My Starving Children.”
